Primergy is pioneering The Gemini Model – a holistic approach to clean energy development that takes into account complete ecosystem management, collaborative partnerships and equitable stakeholder engagement. As the importance of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors continues to grow, Gemini is one of the first projects to move beyond direct clean energy investment, to successfully integrate holistic ESG factors in a way that presents a model framework for future clean energy developments.
We are honored to work with a diverse set of partners who are experts in their fields, leaders in the community, and are vital to the long term success of Gemini.
The Moapa Band of Paiutes are one of our primary partners, and Gemini would not be successful without their leadership and participation. We respect the work they have done around clean energy in the past, the generational knowledge of the land that they bring to all solar projects and their essential leadership on Gemini.
The Moapa Band of Paiutes have two decades of experience with solar development, including the first large-scale solar project ever built on tribal trust land. Their perspective, as landowners, project neighbors, and experts in regional infrastructure development, is crucial to the success of Gemini and the development of meaningful community equity partnerships.
As landowners, the Moapa Band of Paiutes provide water and access that is vital to this project, and they provide an unparalleled expertise in the natural resources of the lands. In addition, tribal members participate in the development and construction of these projects by working as equipment operators, biological monitors, cultural monitors and more.
Through this partnership, Primergy is proud to support the Moapa Band of Paiutes mission of self governance. With respect and recognition for the tribal councils of the past, the current tribal council has continued the vision to develop solar projects on their land in a way that will bring immediate benefits to their people, protect the land and provide ongoing opportunity for future generations.
Primergy utilizes several specific conservation techniques in preparing the Gemini site for the construction and installation of solar panels and battery storage. These techniques, incorporated across an 18-to-24-month period prior to starting construction activities, include established “best practices” for mitigating dust and storm water pollution, as well as novel methods of mowing the solar array sites and constructing tortoise exclusion fences, with the least impact to the existing vegetation, that represent significant new standards for solar construction in these environments.
We are utilizing the latest research and design considerations to minimize the footprint of Gemini, and ensure that local flora and fauna will continue to thrive on site with minimal impact from the solar panel installations. This approach has allowed Gemini to reduce the project footprint by over 20% and reduce the need for access roads by 25% compared to traditional projects.
We prioritize working with a diverse set of partners who are experts in their fields, leaders in the community, and are vital to the long term success of Gemini. Local partners such as SNEI, who are experts in environmental compliance, and Soil Tech, who operate with the motto of “balancing construction with nature,” bring decades of experience managing construction projects that preserve the existing desert landscape.
The size, scale and integration of battery storage makes Gemini one of the most complex clean energy projects ever developed. Gemini is not just a solar project, but neither is it simply a “solar + battery” project. Primergy is managing a large volume of environmental and natural resources, collaborating with a diverse set of project stakeholders and building a first-of-its-kind battery storage system.
The future of our country’s energy relies on battery storage and Gemini is building that future today. By adding battery storage to a solar power plant, we can create a more reliable and consistent power supply that can feed back into the grid when it is needed most. This will be one of the largest and most efficient battery storage systems ever built. It pairs sophisticated infrastructure with state of the art software capable of directing specific electrons down to the millisecond.
Gemini uses a DC-Coupled Battery Energy Storage System to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and maximize the capture and storage of solar energy on site. This is one of the largest DC Coupled Solar + Storage projects in the world, utilizing state-of-the-art software engineering and electrical architecture to balance energy loads across more than 186 storage subsystems on site.
